About

This toolkit has been assembled by the research and development team at the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA).

It is aimed at local authority planning and housing officers, development teams from housing associations, small builders and community organisations – all of whom may need guidance on how to facilitate more opportunities for people who want to build their own homes.

NaCSBA is indebted to The Nationwide Foundation, the charitable arm of the Nationwide Building Society.

The Foundation funded the research into how most other European countries deliver a much higher proportion of their new homes this way, and the team’s work with around 50 local authorities in the UK helping it to deliver more opportunities for people to build or commission their own affordable homes.

The work focussed on two main issues - how to create ready-to-go, modestly priced serviced building plots and how communities can collaborate to jointly commission their own homes.
